FAQ’s

Typically a job takes anywhere from 9 to 12 weeks until completion. Some custom jobs may require longer delivery times.

There are two ways to replace your entry door. You can replace just the door panel, or slab, or the entire pre-hung (including door frame) unit. For the slab only, measure the height and width on the door you are replacing – do not measure sweep (weather seal) on the bottom of the door. If you wish to have the door prepped for hinges, lockset and deadbolt you will need to supply your retailer with the following information:

  • Distance from the top of the door to the top of the first hinge,
  • Distance from the top of the door to the top of the second hinge,
  • Distance from the top of the door to the top of the third hinge,
  • Distance from the top of the door to the top of the fourth hinge (for 96” doors),
  • The size of hinge you are using (width and height with hinge open),
  • Distance from the top of the door to the center of the deadbolt,
  • Distance from the top of the door to the center of the lockset,
  • Distance from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt and from the edge of the door to the center of the lockset. They should be the same.

For the entire pre-hung unit, measure the height and width of your entire door opening, stud to stud, floor to header – called the rough opening. To measure accurately, you might have to remove some interior casing (moulding) to see the backside of the door frame. Typically, no more than a one inch of extra space is desired between the actual (outside to outside) door unit dimension and the rough opening, length and width. Shimming, blocking or additional framing may be required in the opening to accommodate the new door unit.

To determine if your doors are functioning properly you should look for the following:

  1. Are there drafts or cold air coming in from around your door area?
  2. Poor operation. Are you having difficulties opening or closing your doors?
  3. Rotting and pealing around your door frame may indicate it is time for your doors to be replaced.
  4. Is your main entry door more than 25 years old?

The older doors are primarily wood construction. Today, the most popular entry doors in Canada are steel construction doors. Steel is highly durable and won’t crack, warp or come apart and steel doors provide the highest level of protection from severe storm damage including heavy winds, rain and flying debris. If security and durability are top priorities for your home’s entryway, a steel door is your best choice. A steel door is far stronger than either fiberglass or wood. Steel provides unmatched protection from burglary and forced entry. Steel doors are also very cost-effective to manufacture and offer significant cost advantages over wood and fibreglass doors.

Depending on what is important to you will help make your decision on what to have. Is it Security? All three materials are acceptable, while steel is stronger than wood or fiberglass, the difference is not significant. Regardless of which door you choose, you want to make sure it fits tightly into the frame with no more than 1/8″ clearance between the door and the frame. Also make sure it is fitted with secure, high quality door locks – not only will these features give you security, they’ll also help prevent drafts and reduce heating costs.

Exterior doors are constructed from fiberglass, wood, steel or engineered composite. Here are some advantages to each material:

Fiberglass doors: This material features the feel and look of genuine wood, right down to the knots and cracks (with less upkeep). They are built to consistently withstand the harshness of any climate (hot or cold, wet or dry).

Wood doors: Comes from trees that grow in a variety of species, such as fir, pine, mahogany or alder. Each species has a range of characteristics, like grain, color and sap content, which all contribute to its unique appearance.

Steel doors: This is an economical option, offering strength and durability and is a good choice for most climates. These doors are also treated to deliver excellent rust-resistance. They will require only minimal maintenance.

The steel doors aren’t solid steel, but instead cover a foam or wooden core.  A 20-gauge steel layer covers the wooden frame and foam. Our steel doors are also Energy Star-certified thanks to the high-density polyurethane foam they contain, which helps prevent heat transfer. Steel doors don’t rot, warp or swell when exposed to the elements, like wood doors. Our doors are typically less expensive than solid Fiberglass doors.
